Product Description

Liberty Tree Pendant Brass w/ silver antique finish

The Liberty Tree was an elm tree in Boston which was the site of the first act of defiance against the British government. On August 14, 1765, King George III sent Andrew Oliver to impose the Stamp Act. Patriots who later called themselves the Sons of Liberty viewed the Stamp Act as a means of censorship, rallied together and hung Oliver from the elm tree. Up in the tree with the effigy hung a British cavalry jackboot and grinning from inside the boot was a devil-like doll holding a scroll marked "Stamp Act." This initiated the resistance that led to the American Revolutionary War. The tree became a rallying point for the growing resistance and it is believed that the Sons of Liberty adorned the elm's branches with lanterns to symbolize unity. It is for that reason a group of Loyalists chopped it down into firewood in an act of spite.

As resistance to the British grew, flags bearing a representation of the Liberty Tree were flown to symbolize the unwavering spirit of liberty. These flags were later a common sight during the battles of the American Revolution.

Our Liberty Tree Pendant is based on an illustration of the actual tree set inside a period lantern to represent the unity and spirit of liberty our ancestors so bravely fought for.
