The American presence in Vietnam was sometimes referred to as the "Zippo War". Almost every soldier had one since the lighter was one of the small connections to home that they could carry with them. They personalized them with maps, inspirational quips, or their company & service information. The soldiers held the lighter as a lucky charm that would bring him good fortune and protection from the evils lurking in the jungle. The Zippo has been called "small, speaking archeological object" that evince the great personal sacrifices and heroism of those who served in Vietnam.
